Heirs of Earth

I just saw a report with a great news. It seems Vaikom Mohammed Basheer’s celebrated chronicle ‘Bhoomiyude Avakaashikal’ (implies – Heirs of earth) is shortly going to be a motion picture, that too, right from the hands of my favorite movie director – TV Chandran. Now, imagine who is playing lead – Yes!! It’s Mohanlal himself. For a change, his co-stars in this movie would be spiders, ants etc. I am as thrilled as any avid Basheer fan, and I just savor these moments during which I envisage how the lead character will be thrown into the intellects of the audience, how the movie will portray the subtle moments and humor in the story etc etc etc...The thoughts go on.... In short, just by visualizing frames in mind, I feel I am back - alive and kicking!!

At any rate, it’s the best accolade that can be showered on one of the best writers to grace the soil of Kerala – Vaikom Mohammed Basheer!!

I am waiting to see this movie gettingrelased. Still remember it which we all studied in school days. Simply Great!!.
Mohanlal talking to spiders and ants will be as good as Mammootty talking to Narayani akka KPAC Lalitha in "Mathilukal". Would it be even great ? Only time will tell. You rightly said, its one of the best accolade that any one can shower on Basheer.
"Jeevitham Youvana Theekshanavum, Hrudayam Prema Surabhilavumaaya ee asulabha sundara nimishathil Bahavathi enthu cheyyukayaanu?"
How else could we start a love letter ?

I'm afraid whether the director will be able to portrait the complete beauty of that story as it is narrated by the Basheer. When I read that story, I can't imagine any one other than Basheer himself as the hero. Mohanlal playing that role......

dear abhilash,
with great sense of shame and regret i confess that myself being a malayalee, have never read the great Basheers' stories, mainly because i've not learnt to read or write malayalam as i was brought up in north india.

T.V.Chandran happens to be one of my favourite filmmakers and MohanLal, (like everybody elses')my favourite actor so could you please do me and a lot of others like me a favour?

since u write so beautifully, can u please write something like a feature or a profile of Mr. Vaikom Basheer? also can u include some of his celebrated works?
please, this is a humble request.

Dhanu: You are absolutely right da. Anyway since you mentioned about Narayani and Mammooty in 'Mathilukal' - There was an incident when Adoor went to Basheer for discussing about the movie, and Basheer seems to have asked "Who is doing the role of Narayani?". And it seems Adoor got a bit tensed and were looking at the faces of Meera and Dr. MM Basheer who were with him before answering, wondering if his reply is going to upset Basheer. Recouping the courage he told "No one is doing this role. I was thinking of restricting the role to dialogues only". Much to the relief of Adoor, Basheer told "Very good. That's the best way to portray Narayani."
Lekshmi: I believe no film maker can portray a good story in a better way than its written. This is obviously because the freedom of space and language that the writer has. A simple example to portray this would be the incident when Abdullah asked Adoor how he will portray 'Penninte Manam' as mentioned by Basheer in Mathilukal. And Adoor replied "Not possible. I am not even thinking of showing it." When you are making a film from Basheer's story, its an extremely challenging job to bring in the level of detail in the story. But again, when you read Mathilukal, you can't imagine anyone other than Basheer doing that role - But Adoor did take a beautiful movie with maximum justice to the story, and Mammooty did a wonderful job as Basheer. Lets hope TV Chandran and Lalettan would be able to repeat the show. Even half as good as book would make a wonderful treat for all of us.
Parvati: Thanks and appreciate your spirit in checking on Malayalam Literature and its gems. But for people like me who are just trying to grab bits and pieces of malayalam writings, there are all chances that my opinions would be immensely prejudiced and dim-witted. To see the exquisiteness of Basheer's writings, the best way is to read them. Assuring you that if you learn to read/write malayalam just to go through Basheer's books, you will find that every effort you spent for it is entirely worth it. Anyway had heard some rumour about DC books publishing English translations of Basheer’s novels – Will check on it when I go to press club road next. Apparently, its positive that translations can never have even 10% of the ‘effect’ that Basheer gives directly.
